Regent University Launches New Journal for Renewal Theology

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (Apr. 1, 2025) – Regent University is announcing the debut of its Journal for Renewal Theology—a scholarly, academic, and refereed journal with an international editorial board that seeks to promote Biblical and theological research that is focused on Renewal Theology.

Renewal Theology is the exploration, formulation, and proclamation of the renewal of the Church through the loving-kindness and holiness of God, the eternal Father, in the death and resurrection of the Son, Jesus Christ, and the renewing power of the Holy Spirit.

“In our pursuit of Renewal Theology, we know that we are treading on holy ground.” said Corné J. Bekker, Dean of the School of Divinity at Regent University and founding editor of the Journal for Renewal Theology. “Theological exploration, rooted in the holy Scriptures and guided by the Holy Spirit, should be marked by a deep desire to proclaim, honor, worship, and adore the eternal triune God. The Journal for Renewal Theology aims to strengthen the faith of the Christian community and emphasizes the conviction, formalized by Augustine in the fourth century as ‘I believe in order to understand’ and by Anselm in the eleventh century as, ‘faith seeking understanding’.”

Dr. J. Rodmann Williams (1918-2008), who was one of the founding professors at the Regent School of Divinity and who coined the description of Renewal Theology, remarked, The concern of Renewal Theology in every area of study is truth. This is not an attempt to advance a particular cause but to understand in totality what the Christian faith proclaims. It is not only a matter of individual doctrines but also of the full round of Christian truth.”

Dr. Zachary Dawson, assistant professor in the School of Divinity who is serving as the managing editor of the new journal, commented, “The Journal for Renewal Theology will serve the evangelical academy as a scholarly forum devoted to the recovery of Biblical truth, the restoration of orthodox doctrine, and the edification of Christ’s Church for years to come.”

The Journal for Renewal Theology is accepting appropriate submissions that fit its mission and criteria and seeks to publish a yearly edition of peer-reviewed and refereed scholarly research.
