Federal Work-Study (FWS)

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a need-based federally funded program offered as part of an eligible student’s financial aid package. Eligibility for FWS funds is determined through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Please note that being offered FWS funds Does Not guarantee that a student will receive a position. Students must apply for a student employment position on the HR Student Employment page.

  • FWS is a federally funded need-based program that awards funds based on a student’s need as determined by the FAFSA.
  • FWS provides Part-time job opportunities to qualified students.
  • FWS funds are not credited to the student’s account upfront and will not be considered during Semester Check-In.
  • Students attending courses on campus, who are eligible to utilize Federal Work-Study funds, will be notified through their Genisys account. All other eligible students will be notified during the hiring process if they obtain a student employment position.
  • FWS earned funds are not considered when determining a student’s eligibility for Federal need-based aid.
  • Flexible work schedule that works around your school schedule.
  • Quick Commute. Most positions are located on campus.
  • Practical Work. Students can apply for positions that align with their major or interests, which provides valuable experience.
  • Visit the Human Resources Student Employment page.
  • Students will need to secure a student employment position. Being eligible for FWS does not guarantee a position.
  • Students normally work between 5-20 hours per week and may not work during their scheduled class hours.
  • FWS funds are not applied to a student’s account. Instead, students will receive a paycheck. Further information on this will be provided when/if a student receives a position.
  • Students will not be paid less than the Federal or state minimum wage, whichever is higher.
  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  2. Complete any subsequent financial aid requirements established for you (see the Steps to Aid Checklist).
  3. Review available student job opportunities on the Student Employment page and complete application steps for the desired position.
  4. If selected for the position by the hiring manager, Human Resources will collaborate with the Student Financial Aid Office to determine if you can be placed in a Federal Work-Study version of the position (this is based on your personal eligibility, as well as the eligibility of the job for payment under FWS).
    • Human Resources will place eligible students into the FWS version of the position, when applicable.
    • Otherwise, Human Resources will place the student in a standard version of the job (wages paid fully by Regent University, not offset by the FWS program).

Answer: Potentially. Students selected for verification must submit all requested documents and complete the verification review before determining eligibility.

Answer: No, FWS earnings do not count towards a student’s Student Aid Index (SAI, formally known as Estimated Family Contribution EFC). Earnings are reported to the IRS for tax purposes and listed as income but are not considered when determining a student’s eligibility for federal need-based aid.
