Renewal Journal

The School of Divinity’s Journal for Renewal Theology is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal designed for the purpose of Christian renewal and revival. Readers will find a range of articles related to the exploration of theological inquiry and the advancement of biblical truth.

The Journal for Renewal Theology (JRTh) is focused on the theological exploration, retrieval, and praxis of Renewal Theology grounded in holy Scripture, Trinitarian theology, and the faithful history of the Church. Renewal Theology is the exploration, formulation, and proclamation of the renewal of the Church through the loving-kindness and holiness of God, the eternal Father, in the death and resurrection of the Son, Jesus Christ, and the renewing power of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:4-7).

“The concern of Renewal Theology in every area of study is truth. This is not an attempt to advance a particular cause but to understand in totality what the Christian faith proclaims. It is not only a matter of individual doctrines but also of the full round of Christian truth.”

– J. Rodman Williams (1918–2008), Renewal Theology

JRTh is housed at Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA. Article manuscripts submitted to the journal and all editorial correspondence should be directed to Dr. Zachary K. Dawson at renewaljournal@regent.edu. A double-blind peer-review process is meticulously followed, and the journal editors endeavor together to adhere to strict publishing standards to ensure the production of a high-quality journal.

JRTh accepts books for review. Publishers are welcome to send review copies to the address below. There is no guarantee that all books will be reviewed as the number of books far outnumbers available reviewers. Those interested in reviewing books should email renewaljournal@regent.edu.

Doctrinal Statement

The JRTh affirms the Nicene Creed, grounded in the belief that the Holy Bible is the inspired, infallible, and inerrant source of Christian doctrine and precept. Potential contributors submitting articles and book reviews to JRTh must affirm this statement and understand that all content published by JRTh implicitly presupposes this statement to be true.

JRTh accepts submissions in three categories (the category should be labeled at the time of submission):

  • Articles – full-length, rigorously researched pieces, usually 6,000-8,000 words (including footnotes), in the fields of biblical, theological, history, or ministry studies. Shorter and longer manuscripts may also be considered.
  • Book Reviews – critical reviews of recently published books, usually 1,000-2,000 words.
  • Review Articles – more substantial examinations of a book or group of books than a book review, usually a minimum of 4,000 words.

Manuscripts should be in English and should follow the latest edition of Kate L. Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, supplemented by the Chicago Manual of Style (18th ed.) when needed. For biblical languages, please use the fonts available from the Society of Biblical Literature website. Abbreviations should follow the SBL Handbook of Style, 2nd ed. Submissions not following the correct style will be returned to the author for revision prior to being considered for publication by the editors.

Manuscripts should be sent in electronic format (MS Word with accompanying PDF) to renewaljournal@regent.edu along with an abstract no longer than 100 words with a list of 3–5 key words and an identification of the submission type (i.e., article, book review, review article). By submitting a manuscript for review, the author agrees that the manuscript has not already been published nor is it currently being considered for publication by another publisher. If published in JRTh, the author agrees not to publish the work elsewhere without permission. All indications of the author’s name must be removed from the manuscript, including the use of the first person when referring to the author’s cited works in the body of the manuscript.
