What is Business Analytics?
Perhaps you’ve considered a career as a business analyst, but you’re not sure what the job entails. If you’ve wondered, “what is business analytics,” this article is for you.
What Does a Business Analyst Do?
A business analyst will study data, using statistical models and data mining to turn data into business insights. These insights will increase efficiency, productivity and revenue of the business.
Components of Business Analytics
There are many different components of business analytics including data aggregation, data mining, forecasting, predictive analytics, and statistical modeling.
Data Aggregation
As a business analyst, you will compile data with the intent to prepare datasets for statistical analysis. The phases involved in data aggregation including reporting, granularity, and polling. The reporting period involves how long the data will be collected. A data set will need to be collected in a timeframe that is statistically significant. Granularity is the time data points are set during the reporting period. Polling involves how often samples of data are collected. The data collection can include demographic and psychographic data. It can also include conversion and revenue data.
Data Mining
As a business analyst, you will use data mining to explore and analyze large data sets. This will help you discover patterns and rules in the data set. Different types of data can include relational databases, object-oriented databases, and web mining. Data mining starts with understanding the business and data that is needed to meet a goal. You will prepare the data to be modeled. Then you will evaluate the data to understand the steps to deployment.
There are a few different techniques in data mining. They include classification which is used to retrieve data information. This allows the data to be classified into different classes. Clustering is a type of data mining that helps the business analyst to understand the differences and similarities between the data. Association data mining identifies similarities between two or more data points. This helps discover patterns in the data set.
Forecasting
As a business analyst, you will need to predict demand and understand future trends with the help of past and present data. Forecasting is different than budgeting because you will help identify seasonality and anything that is unforeseen. When the actual data is not comparable to the forecast, the business analyst will know something has changed the demand or trends. This takes away the uncertainty by using historical data to predict the future.
There are a few different forecasting methods with the most prominent including qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative forecasting takes into consideration personal judgement as viewed by an expert. Quantitative forecasting on the other hand focuses on mathematics making it consistent and objective.
Predictive Analytics
As a business analyst, you will use predictive analytics to extract information from data sets to determine patterns. These patterns will help predict the future outcomes that are expected. Predictive analytics works with the help of big data, data mining, statistical modeling, and machine learning. Predictive analytics will allow you to look into the future and be more accurate in revenue predictions.
Statistical Models
Within business analytics, you will use statistical models with mathematical equations. Statistical models use explanatory and dependent variables. The dependent variable is the variable we want to describe and predict. The explanatory variable is the independent variable that is used to predict the dependent variables. Some common statistical models include linear nodes and logistic nodes. Linear regression models predict a trend based on the relationship between the target variable and the predictors. Logistic regression classifies records based on the value of the input fields.
