Sickle Cell Forum Attracts 100+ Attendees

October 29, 2009

Regent University hosted the Sickle Cell Association forum, "Strengthening the Family—Dealing with Fear" on October 24. More than 100 guests attended the day-long event, which included a guest speaker, workshops, music and children's activities.

Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder characterized by red blood cells that assume an abnormal shape. In the United States, it is estimated that over 70,000 people have sickle cell disease. About 1,000 babies are born with the disease each year in America. Sickle cell disease has no cure.

"The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of the on-going plight of those with the disease," said Regent Director of Community Life Roger Cheeks. "We want to also encourage community support, networking and provide a voice for people born with sickle cell." The guest speaker was Dr. Tasha Jackson Simmons, who has sickle cell disease.

Audrey Newell, a Regent student pursuing a joint degree in the Schools of Divinity and Psychology & Counseling, helped coordinate the event.
