Film Festival Showcases International Talent

By Rachel Judy

October 23, 2009

Each year, the Fireworks International Redemptive Film Festival is the place to find talented filmmakers. The fourth annual festival, held October 16-17 at Regent University's Communication & Performing Arts Center, was no exception.

This year's festival featured a variety of films from around the world, including Australia, Ireland, Ghana, Canada, Sudan, the United Kingdom and Uganda. Filmmakers received awards in five categories: Student, Professional, Professional Low-Budget, Distinctly Gospel, and the Redemptive Storyteller Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Three Regent student films won awards: Transposition, directed by Josh Overbay and produced by April Campion; Hazelnut, directed and produced by Joseph Rohrs; and I'm Not Invisible, directed by Jeffrey Dear and produced by Julia Hunt.

The Redemptive Storyteller Award was given to Dr. Paul Crouch, the founder and president of the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). "We were happy to award the Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Paul Crouch, who truly deserves this recognition for his many years of meritorious service to Christian Broadcasting and filmmaking," said festival founder Dr. Chris Cunningham.

All proceeds from the festival are donated to the International Justice Mission, a human rights organization helping to redeem and empower victims of slavery around the world.

The festival features films that are redemptive in nature. "I started the Redemptive Film Festival to encourage filmmakers to tell good clean stories with a redemptive purpose," Cunningham explained. "There are so many filmmakers out there telling good stories, but many of these go unnoticed."

Since its creation four years ago, the festival has received hundreds of film submissions from 30 different countries.
