Bus Stop Opens on Regent Stage

By Amanda Morad | November 15, 2013

Bus Stop opens Friday, Nov. 15.

In the 1950s, William Inge was one of the most well-known playwrights in New York, having penned a string of Broadway hits with film adaptations and major awards including a Pulitzer Prize and an Oscar. One of those hits comes to Regent University's Studio Theatre Friday, Nov. 15.

Bus Stop will spend two weekends in Regent's Studio Theatre with showings at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15-17 and 21-23. Saturday and Sunday showings at 2:30 p.m. on both weekends are also available.

Purchase tickets at the Box Office.

Bus Stop, the 1956 film adaptation of which starred Marilyn Monroe, is one of Inge's most celebrated comedies. The New York Times calls it "an uproarious comedy that never strays from the truth." When a bus becomes stranded at a rural diner one snowy night, eight unlikely characters find themselves faced with nothing but time and one another.

"This production features a particularly seasoned cast of graduate students, brilliantly detailed design (youll be convinced you can saddle up to the counter of this rural Kansas diner and order some grub at intermission), and a story that is both charming and haunting in its simplicity," said the show's director, and an associate professor in the School of Communication & the Arts, Eric Harrell. Harrell is also the artistic director for Regent's professional theatre company, Tidewater Stage.

Bus Stop has long been praised for its emphasis on bringing people together who only appear to have nothing in common. "In Bus Stop, Inge asks us all to pull up a chair for the evening and join the conversation," Harrell said. "He asks us to examine the commonalities that unite us and strive for greater empathy before we continue our separate journeys down the road."
