Regent's United Way Campaign Earns Awards

By Amanda Morad | June 12, 2013

Each year, in addition to numerous community outreaches and participation in a variety of local volunteer efforts, the faculty and staff of Regent University contribute to the charitable work of the United Way of South Hampton Roads through a pledge campaign.

On Thursday, June 6, Regent's campaign earned two awards at the chapter's annual banquet, which was attended by more than 450 United Way program coordinators from across the region.

Regent won the Trailblazer Bronze award for the $36,304 raised during the 2013 campaign. The pledge drive was also recognized as the leading campaign in the private colleges category, topping other local schools.

Perhaps the greatest accolade Regent's campaign received at the banquet was for Top Campaign Increase in their category. From 2012 to 2013, the campaign showed a 27 percent increase in contributions. Regent's giving has consistently increased since the program began, with more people contributing more charitable donations each year.

"Regent's faculty and staff continue to step up to fill the gap for others in our community, alongside many other great organizations in South Hampton Roads," said Regent's vice president for Enrollment Management and Information Technology, Tracy Stewart. "Even though so many of us give to our churches, missions and many other worthy causes, we know we need to help our neighbors, many of whom we will never meet or know how our contributions assisted them."

In 2013, 53 percent of campus staff and faculty participated in the United Way pledge campaign. As Regent continues to reach out to the Hampton Roads community through this and other partnerships, the goals for participation and giving are on the rise.

"I am looking forward to this year's campaign and considering specifically how we can increase our participation rate while continuing to increase our total dollars pledged," said Laurie Ann Finn, the campaign's coordinator. "Our plan is to creatively link our campaign to a United Way agency serving the Coleman Place neighborhood in Norfolk, where Regent has an existing presence and ongoing efforts to impact the community."

In addition to the yearly giving campaign, Regent employees annually participate in the United Way Day of Caring, an event for businesses and organizations across Hampton Roads to donate volunteer hours to a variety of projects.
