School of Education Partners with Virginia Wesleyan

By Amanda Morad | January 4, 2013

Regent University's School of Education (SOE) has established a partnership with Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC) to provide accelerated admission and a 25 percent tuition discount to VWC education graduates. The discount will apply to select SOE master's level programs, including Special Education, Reading Specialist, and Curriculum & Instruction.

"This partnership provides early career educators the opportunity to enroll in a graduate program in areas of high need," noted SOE dean, Dr. Gail Derrick. "Teaching is a complex process and educators have a critical role in the improvement of schools. Better-educated teachers contribute to the professionalism of teaching, and lead to better-taught and better-prepared pupils."

Derrick is a graduate of VWC (1982) and received the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Award. She played a key role in securing the partnership and will manage the relationship between the institutions. This is the first partnership of its kind established by SOE, but it won't be the last. School administrators are pursuing relationships with several colleges and universities.

"Teacher quality and teacher competency are at the forefront of educational initiatives," she explained. "Research suggests that teacher coursework has a positive effect in terms of the opportunity to learn the profession and reduce anxiety among new teachers, thus reducing teacher attrition and improving retention in the field." Partnerships like this one address these issues directly by providing top-of-the-line training for educators.

VWC graduates who apply to SOE with a minimum GPA of 3.0 will have their admissions application accelerated and be eligible for the tuition discount. Once accepted and enrolled in an SOE program, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to keep their discount eligibility each semester.

The agreement with VWC was made official via a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both schools in December.
