History

 

The field of Professional and Continuing Education has flourished in the United States and internationally for more than 130 years. From the earliest days of Oxford University Extension to the post-World War era of adult learning in the U.S., continuing education has sought to develop practical skills and knowledge to advance the workforce. Today, through online learning, the philosophy of adult and continuing education is flourishing as professionals and leaders have access to affordable education, expertise and training through a vast world-wide network of resources.
At Regent University, this tradition continues the division of Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) was established in September 2010. With the purpose of providing quality, affordable, online and onsite programs for professionals and leaders globally, the division continues to grow with more than 8,800 students and conference participants worldwide.

History and Timeline

September 2010 - Division of Professional and Continuing Education at Regent University is established with alumna, Julianne Robbins Cenac ('98), as assistant vice president to create and oversee the new division.

October 2010 - AVP Julianne Cenac leads a university delegation to China and secures partnerships with three universities to participate in training and exchange programs. Memoranda of Understanding are signed with China Youth University for Political Science in Beijing, Xi'an International Studies University and Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics for university-wide collaboration. The team including Dr. Dail Fields and Dr. Gary Oster also provided training to more than 200 government and business leaders in Gansu Province.

February 2011 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education launches its inaugural certificate programs in Homeland Security and Digital Media and registers its first students.

March 2011 - AVP Julianne Cenac travels to South Africa to work with Regent University alum John Jones ('10) conduct a needs assessment and develop a business plan for providing professional and continuing education services in-country.

March 2011 - AVP Julianne Cenac travels to Chengdu, China to conduct leadership training and establish an agreement with Jiaxiang School for university-wide collaboration.

June 2011 - Regent University Professional and Continuing Education joins the University Professional Continuing Education Association

July 2011 - Regent University Professional and Continuing Education transitions to the Office of Academic Affairs.

July 2011 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education launches its inaugural Summer Institutes with 51 participants from China, Turkey, South Africa and the U.S. who participate in leadership development and English language immersion programs.

August 2011 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education completes an outreach program, The Empowerment Series, in collaboration with Lawson Properties to conduct professional and life skills training to residents of the Lexington Park Housing Development.

September 2011 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education completes its first program, a leadership mentoring and coaching program with Hatfield Church and Living Word Church in Pretoria, South Africa.

October 2011 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education hosts an Open House Lunch Reception attracting more than 150 leaders and professionals from the region in the business, military, government and non-profit sectors.

January 2012 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education launches the Powered by Regent church education program delivering customized training to churches and ministries nationwide.

March 2012 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education in collaboration with Grace Bible Church of Soweto hosts the Christian Leadership Conference in South Africa with more than 5,000 participants. In addition, PCE co-hosted The Empowerment Academy Conference for Future Business Leaders of South Africa attracted more than 80 emerging leaders from some of the major South African corporations for an intensive two-day conference on values-based leadership.

March 2012 - Executive Vice President, Paul Bonicelli, Ph.D. leads a university delegation with AVP Julianne Cenac to Beijing and Lanzhou China to expand university-wide collaborations and programs.

July 2012 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education expands its Summer Institutes adding professional development programs for K-12 educators in collaboration with the School of Education.

September 2012 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education expands its offerings to include 12 online certificate programs and six leadership institutes.

December 2012 - The Regent Global Education Center (RGEC) is established in South Africa as a branch of Regent University, officially launching the Division of Professional and Continuing Education operations in-country. John Jones ('10) is appointed to head the RGEC.

January 2013 - The American Psychological Association (APA) awards the Division of Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) full approval to authorize and deliver Continuing Education (CE) courses for psychologists and other mental health professionals.

March 2013 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education signs a collaboration agreement with The Potter's House and T.D. Jakes Enterprises to provide online certificate programs and global leadership institutes conference services.

May 2013 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education receives VA approval for GI Bill® funding of PCE online certificate programs.

June 2013 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education in collaboration with T.D. Jakes Enterprises launches the T.D. School of Leadership Powered by Regent University Professional and Continuing Education.

July 2013 - The Division of Professional and Continuing Education signs a collaboration agreement to be the national training provider for the Christian Business Chamber of America.
