Biography
Professor Velloney joined the faculty at the Regent University School of Law in August 2008 and currently teaches Criminal Law, Constitutional Criminal Procedure, and Trial Practice. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Global Justice, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law and as the Director of the LL.M. Program in Human Rights. Professor Velloney received the Regent University Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Fall of 2011 and was selected as the 2L/3L Professor of the Year in 2010 and 2012. Professor Velloney also lectures on Multistate and Virginia Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure for BARBRI.
Prior to joining the Regent faculty, Professor Velloney spent twenty years on active duty in the Army, serving initially as a Field Artillery Officer in the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York and ultimately retiring in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. Professor Velloney earned his LL.M. (honor graduate) from the Army Judge Advocate General's School, his J.D. from the Yale Law School, and his B.S. (distinguished cadet) from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is also a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College.
Professor Velloney's career as an Army lawyer included service as a Legislative Counsel for the Secretary of the Army and Deputy Staff Judge Advocate for Fort Riley, Kansas. As an Associate Professor at the Judge Advocate General's School in Charlottesville, Virginia, Professor Velloney taught and published in the areas of Criminal Law and Trial Advocacy. Additionally, he served as the Senior Defense Counsel at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Officer in Charge of the Law Center in Augsburg, Germany, Command Judge Advocate for Task Force Able Sentry in Skopje, Macedonia, and Trial Counsel (Criminal Prosecutor), Administrative Law Attorney, and Legal Assistance Attorney in Vilseck and Grafenwoehr, Germany.
A member of the Connecticut bar, Professor Velloney has contributed to the legal profession through scholarly publications, lectures, and seminars primarily in the areas of criminal law and procedure, trial advocacy, and military law. More importantly, however, he is devoted to helping shape the future of the legal profession by teaching, training, and mentoring law students to pursue professional excellence while remaining committed to absolute integrity and virtuous character reflective of Christian principles. Professor Velloney and his wife, Felitz, have three daughters, Michaela, Hannah, and Rebekah. They are all avid soccer, skiing, and Red Sox fans.
