The Reading Specialist endorsement program is designed to meet the growing demand for trained reading specialists by providing competency-based courses that fulfill the requirements for a Virginia Reading Specialist endorsement. Our Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) approved Reading Specialist program courses offer a balanced perspective on teaching reading - preparing teachers in the areas of supervision, communication skills, technology, reading assessment, instruction, curriculum and research.
Master's in Reading Specialist Program Highlights
Courses: Course Sequence & Descriptions
Length: 37 credit hours. May be completed in 18-24 months
Format: Eight-week courses may be taken entirely online. Students may begin the program in August, October, January, March, May, or July.

The Master of Education in Reading Specialist program will prepare you to fulfill the requirements for a Virginia Reading Specialist endorsement and seek a position as a Reading Specialist in the public school system. This degree benefits any general classroom teacher at any level.
Master's in Reading Specialist program graduates will be able to:

- Apply all of the Virginia Department of Education competencies and skills required for state licensure.
- Exhibit advanced writing skills using APA Format.

NOTE: The State of Virginia requires a Master's degree, professional teaching license and a minimum of three years of general teaching experience in which reading is of primary importance in order to earn the Reading Specialist endorsement. Candidates for the Reading Specialist endorsement are required to take and pass the Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE) Assessment for Reading Specialists prior to receiving the degree and being recommended for licensure/endorsement.
