University Library Celebrates Local Heroes

Throughout the month of July, Regent University Library's summer series, Regent Reads, has encouraged Hampton Roads community children to engage in learning about local and Biblical heroes.

On Tuesday, July 23, participants in Regent Reads discovered how they could be a hero themselves, as they listened to stories with the Biblical themes of being "strong" and "courageous"—learning how to love those in their everyday lives.

Regent's own heroes, President Carlos Campo and CBN/Regent Chief of Police Chris A. Mitchell read to the children.

"Reading to children is one of my greatest joys," said Campo. "And to see young eyes light up when they hear the truth found in exciting stories from the Bible just confirms the importance of reading to our kids as often as possible."

Campo explained that followers of Christ are called to love their neighbors—not just those who live next door, as he took his listeners through the colorful interpretation of The Good Samaritan by Robert Squier.

Mitchell, in uniform, read the rousing Police Officers on Patrol by Kersten Hamilton. The book was a favorite of Melanie West, returning Regent Reads participant, who brought her sons Ty, 8, Tim, 4 and Todd, 2 to Tuesday's event. West and her husband believe in the value of learning and reading in their parenting—and they lead by example.

"We're excited to be a part of Regent," said West. "The boys are really into it; they have such a great time—Ty was even reading along with the president!"

Laura Yamin's granddaughters Alexis, 7, and Isabella, 8, were also returning Regent readers. Yamin noticed the growth of the program from her last visit, and appreciated the flexibility of the library facilities for special-needs children.

"It's something fun to do, and it's Christian-based," said Yamin. "The girls really loved it and wanted to come back."

Regent Reads will conclude Tuesday, July 30 at 10 a.m., and will celebrate the neighborhood's heroes with a visit from a local fireman—and a fire truck!
