"I believe that God has given me the global perspective that the Church needs for this century," said Regent University alumnus Dr. Gustavo Crocker '01 (School of Business & Leadership).

Beginning August 1, Crocker will serve as the 41st general superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene. Crocker was elected into his position of leadership at the denomination's 28th general assembly, which took place this year in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The general assembly is composed of 1,400 delegates chosen to represent the two million congregation members in 159 different nations. Crocker, as an ordained elder and a representative of the church who has served in many leadership positions around the world, was eligible for nomination—and was later elected on the 53rd ballot by the necessary two-thirds majority vote.

"When the people on the floor of the assembly and the people who voted for you are your mentors and your spiritual guides, it's very humbling," said Crocker. "It's humbling to know that they are the ones among you who feel like you will be of value to the kingdom."

Crocker was chosen to serve as one of six general superintendents, and will serve a four-year term as an incumbent leader in this position. He, along with the board of general superintendents, will be charged with the task of guiding the denomination as a whole by ordaining elders and presiding over the worldwide district assemblies.

"I'm looking forward to inspiring the denomination globally and to engage proactively with the mission of God," said Crocker. "He's on the move, and we need to inspire the church to join the movement, to be prepared and be equipped for good service."

As a native of Guatemala and a missionary who has served in nearly 100 different nations, Crocker is no stranger to leading in a global capacity. His favorite phrase is, "I could live here forever"—a result of falling in love with the community members living within the different places he visits around the world.

Regent's campus was no exception. Crocker recalls events leading to his admission into SBL's Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership program synonymous with his nomination for general superintendent. Crocker, while visiting Virginia Beach in 1997, had a "serendipitous encounter," with a recent graduate who encouraged him to apply for Regent's Latin American Leadership Program (LALP), which provides scholarships for Latin-American scholars who have global-leadership potential.

"I was reluctant, but this was so of the Lord," said Crocker.

Soon after his visit, Crocker was surprised to find that his friend had already submitted the necessary paperwork. Thanks to his foresight, Crocker completed his degree, and became the university's second LALP scholar.

"Leadership has become about fads and jargon," said Crocker. "But, my time at Regent gave me theoretical, theological and practical knowledge of what leadership is really all about."

Crocker explained that he will use this theoretical and practical knowledge gained at Regent as he takes over his new position in the church.

"My entire family is humbled, and we are all very excited," said Crocker. "We are eager to see what God has in store for us."
