"Training has always been in my blood," said Dr. Lena Maslennikova, instructional designer/trainer for Regent University's College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). "But it's the instructional design and the online part of it that ended up being my niche."
Maslennikova recently received the 2013 Blackboard Catalyst Award for Exemplary Course Design. She was recognized for her development and instruction of the Blackboard Advanced course for the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The course was one of 168 submitted for recognition within this particular category.
"It feels excellent—like all of that effort and all of that time was put into something very worthy," said Maslennikova. "It's another confirmation of how stellar the CTL team is and how expert they are in the field that they're working in."
Since the spring of 2013, CTL's Blackboard Advanced course is a required professional development class for all Regent faculty members facilitating classes online.
"Quality is what's going to set us apart from our competitors," said Maslennikova. "And this award shows that we're achieving our mission to provide excellent education and impact future leaders through demonstrating quality."
Maslennikova explained the Blackboard Advanced course helps Regent faculty present their students with a high quality online experience. Faculty members are given training on how to build their own "mock" courses with a major focus on the successful elements that make online courses interactive and enjoyable.
"I've been on both sides; I've seen courses as a student, and I think that actually helped me a lot too," said Maslennikova. "When I got to the point of having to train faculty, I could speak from experience of what works and what doesn't work for students."
Maslennikova's six years' experience working as CTL's designer/trainer, as well as her MBA and DSL (Doctor of Strategic Leadership)—both acquired from Regent—contributes to her ability to help Regent faculty clearly and effectively communicate their expertise through Blackboard.
"It's been amazing to see how technology changed, how the quality of online learning has changed, and how the whole education process has transformed at Regent over the last ten years," said Maslennikova. "We've come a long way."
In July, CTL's Blackboard Advanced course will be recognized during Blackboard World 2013—an annual users' conference in Las Vegas, Nev.
