Dr. Amos Yong has been named dean of Regent University's School of Divinity, effective Feb. 15. Yong formerly served as the J. Rodman Williams Professor of Theology as well as director of Doctor of Philosophy degree program. He has been a member of Regent's faculty since 2005.
"Dr. Yong is one of the most celebrated theological scholars in the world, and we are blessed to have him leading the school to even higher levels of excellence and accomplishment for God's glory," said Regent President, Dr. Carlos Campo.
Regent is not the only institution to recognize Yong's excellence in the study of theology. In March 2012, Yong was awarded the prestigious Henry Luce III Fellowship in Theology, a national honor given to only half a dozen professors annually.
Yong expressed several goals and visions he has for the School of Divinity, and plans to support, nurture and serve the greater Regent community. Most importantly, Yong wants to develop a generation of School of Divinity students and faculty who share his passion for Biblical knowledge.
"I really want to use my time as dean to empower students and faculty," said Yong. "In all that we do, I want us all to be fully engaged in learning about important theological issues."
In his career, Yong has published and edited more than a dozen theological books, and journal articles. He has also taught a breadth of classes at Regent ranging from Theology in Global Context to Renewal and Science. Yong also shares a passion and responsibility for aiding doctoral students in their research of areas including interfaith dialogue, Global Pentecostalism and Political Theology.
Before he began his time as a professor at Regent, Yong received his Ph.D. in theology from Boston University. He obtained his master's degree in history from Portland State University and his master's from Western Evangelical Seminary in History of Christian Thought. Yong also earned his bachelor's in ministry from Bethany College.
With his educational background and willingness to lead the School of Divinity in its spiritual vitality, Yong is undoubtedly fortified for the position ahead of him.
"Dr. Robertson has always had a vision that the seminary would be one of the most amazing in the country," said Yong. "I'm excited about the prospects of that and working in that direction."
