Law Team Wins Regional Negotiation Competition
| November 13, 2012
Continuing a tradition of excellence in legal competition, Regent University School of Law's Alternative Dispute Resolution Board (ADR) won the 2012 American Bar Association (ABA) Regional Negotiation Competition Nov. 10-11, at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.
Regent Law's ADR teams will be among teams competing at the ABA National Negotiation Competition in Dallas Feb. 8-9.
Third-year law students Hannah Carter and Chris Bell placed first from a roster of 24 teams representing universities like Georgetown, American University, George Mason, George Washington University, University of Richmond, the University of Maryland, Washington & Lee, William & Mary and other law schools throughout Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
"Our students continue to amaze me with their skill and determination," said Regent Law Dean Jeffrey Brauch. "I can't wait to see what happens in February as Hannah and Chris compete for the national championship. I am deeply proud of them, and I praise God for his blessing on their efforts."
"The problems are provided to the students about two weeks before the competition, and both the preparation that goes into it and the negotiations themselves give students an opportunity to learn and practice negotiation skills," explained professor and team mentor Eric DeGroff. "During the competition, the teams are judged by practicing attorneys and judges, and they receive both oral and written feedback from the judges. The competitions therefore provide the students a way to experience the process of negotiation and to hear multiple perspectives beyond the feedback they would normally get through classroom instruction alone."
Other recent Regent ADR wins include the 2009 Merhige National Environmental Negotiation Competition and the 2007 ABA National Negotiation Championship.
